August TVA Meeting: Twenty clubs were represented at the August 5 TVA
meeting in Irving. The Irving Star Trekkers did an excellent job hosting the meeting and
providing great events for our pleasure on Sunday. The meeting minutes will be sent with
the October newsletter. The membership voted to have the TVA Reunion events March 3-4,
2001 at Pedernales Falls State Park. There will be 2 walks. The Memorial and midnight
walks will be in Fredericksburg Dec 31 and Jan. 1. The next TVA meeting will be at the
Canyon of the Eagles area near Burnett, February 3, 2001. Mark these dates on your
calendars.
Anna Cottrill, our new second vice president needs information on walkers from your
clubs who have passed away during 2000 so she can prepare a memorial board for the
Memorial Event in Fredericksburg. Please send the information to her by email, aecottrill@prodigy.net or snail mail,
7429 Mesa Verde, Ft. Worth, TX 76137.
Other highlights from the meeting included a proposal to have a TVA Walking Day on
Memorial Day, 2001. Temple Pouncey of the Dallas Trekkers will put together the guidelines
for the event. The membership also approved having a TVA booth at the 2001 AVA convention
in Bellevue, Washington. Anna Cottrill will be organizing that effort. Each club is asked
to provide 50 copies of their 2001 YRE brochure for the booth. Details on gathering the
brochures for shipment to the convention will be published in a future newsletter.
One final note from the meeting. I am concerned about the health of the TVA clubs. I
know some clubs are doing well and others are struggling to stay alive. Part of the TVA
By-laws states that the TVA shall encourage development of new clubs and to help
revitalize ailing clubs. To determine what needs to be done for our clubs, we have
developed a questionnaire that will be sent to each club. You will be receiving the survey
shortly. Please be as candid a possible in answering the survey and return it promptly to
Secretary, Becky Lindig.
The TVA officer sheet enclosed is the official list of TVA officers. Please use this
page to replace the old one in your TVA Manual.
YRE RENEWALS: All YRE renewal paperwork has been submitted to the AVA. You are
to be congratulated for the great job you did with the paperwork this year. I only had to
contact 5 clubs for additional information to complete the task. I appreciate your efforts
to make this huge job easier. We will have 77 events sanctioned this year. In the 77 are 3
new events. There were 7 events dropped from last year, so we have 4 less YREs for
2001. Four of the dropped events were bicycle events.
As I went through the paperwork and looked at your maps, some of them were in very poor
condition. Your map should be sharp and easy to read. Some of them looked like they were
the copy of a copy for 10 times. You should have received a note with your paperwork if
you map was in that condition. Please check the maps in your walk box whether you got a
note or not. See if you would be happy using the map to walk a YRE.
Club Operations Topic: Dont forget November 1 is the deadline for
submitting nominations for recognition awards that will be presented at the 2001 AVA
convention. Forms were included in the May AVA Checkpoint material. This is an
opportunity to pay special tribute to those that work hard to promote our sport. Send the
forms directly to Lyn Ward, Southwest Regional Director, 9355 Blazing Star Trail, San
Antonio, TX 78266. Missing this deadline will cause someone to miss out on the special
recognition they deserve. If you need copies of these forms, let me know.
TVA EVENT CALENDAR: Enclosed is the current TVA event calendar for your
use in planning future events. It is always best to avoid scheduling conflicts. Please
review the calendar and let me know of any needed corrections.
Quality events dont just happen. Your hard work makes them happen!
