GREETINGS: Spring has arrived, although I think someone forgot to tell Mother Nature. I am
sure none of us want the usual Spring Storms, but we sure could use some warmer weather. I
hope the rains and cool weather havc not slowed down your participation at the various
events around the state. Clubs work hard to put on the events, so don't let the weather
hold you back from participating.
REUNION WALK REPORT: The annual TVA reunion held at Pedernales Falls State Park was a
success in spite of the weather. It rained most of Saturday, and at the end of the day, we
were all concerned that participation would be around 100. Sunday brought the sunshine and
many more walkers. We ended up with 305 walkers. Of that, 60 were free walkers. All awards
were sold. Robert Theis did an excellent job planning and making sure the events went
well. His hard work and the work of all the club volunteers was greatly appreciated by the
event participants. Thanks to all of you for the great job.
TVA MEETING HIGHLIGHTS: Minutes from the February TVA meeting will be sent out with the
next newsletter. TVA oflices of First Vice President and Treasurer are up for re-election
at the August meeting. The incumbent officers, Robert Theis and Suzanne Markgraff have
expressed willingness to serve a second term. Per the TVA Bylaws, a nominating committee
was appointed. David Mauser, Linda Goodman, and Carol Talpey will accept additional names
for nomination to these positions. They will submit their report by June 1. The TVA
Membership voted to scrap the State Parks Program. The Texas Walking Day program was
tabled until a program co-ordinator is named and presents the plan details to the TVA
Membership. The August TVA meeting will be in San Marcos August 4, 2001.
CONVENTION DELEGATE REGISTRATION: I want to he sure each and every- club in the TVA is
represented at the convention. This can only be accomplished if your club completes the
Delegate Selection and Proxv Designation form that was sent to your club with the January
Checkpoint. Each club must subrnit this form to the National Office to arrivc no later
than June 15. The person designated as the delegate or proxy must be registered for the
Biennial Convention and a person designated as proxy must be a Delegate for another AVA
Club. If your club does not have a person going to the convention as a delegate, fill in
section C., Proxy Designation. I will serve as Proxy for your club. Where it says
Designee's Name, put Chuck Samus, Designee's Club is TVA and the AVA Number is AVA/TX.
Complete and sign the form and mail it to the AVA before June 15. I want all clubs
represented. If you do not have the form, contact me immediately, and I will mail you one.
If you have special voting instructions, please submit them directly to me if I am serving
as proxy for your club. A club must be IN GOOD STANDING with the AVA to be able to vote at
Convention. That means all of your after action reports must be filed and paid and all
past due payments must be made by May 14, 2001. 1 will be contacting each club president
around May 1 so I can compile a list of delegates and proxies. All clubs in the TVA were
represented at the last convention. We want to do it again in 2001.
AVA CONVENTION NEWS.- Plans for the TVA booth at the AVA Convention are being finalized by
Anna Cottrill. We will have displays, food, drawings for wine, and many items from the
Texas Clubs in the booth. We are asking each club to provide 50 brochures for their YRE's
to give out in the booth. Please have them to me or Anna by May 15. They can be mailed to
either of us or hand delivered at an event between now and May 15. Addresses are listed on
the enclosed club officer sheet. .If your club wants to put something special in the
booth, contact Anna so she can be sure there is room for it. The Texas Delegation will all
sit together at the Convention General Meetings. Each Texas Delegate will be given a Texas
Flag to display at appropriate times during the meeting. Ellen Ott is in charge of flag
procurement. TVA EVENT CALENDAR: Enclosed is the current TVA event calendar for your use
in planning future events. It is always best to avoid scheduling conflicts. Please review
the calendar and let me know of any needed corrections.
Quality events don't just happen. Your hard work makes them happen!
