Walking News

To:            TVA Club Presidents and Board of Directors

Subject:    TVA Newsletter______________________________________________________________________________

GREETINGS:   I hope each of you have enjoyed at least a few of the events available during this fall season. It will not be long till Thanksgiving and Christmas are here. There are several Christmas walks planned. These are fun events that give you a chance to see the Christmas Lights from a new perspective. Don’t miss your chance to participate in these events.

TVA   MEETING: The February TVA meeting will be in Corpus Christi, February 2, 2002. The Sparkling City Strollers are the host club for the Saturday meetings and Sunday walk event. Helene Fennessy  has reserved a block of 15 rooms at the Ramada Inn Bayfront Conference Center in Corpus Christi. The room rate is $65.00+ tax per night for a double or king room. This does not include any breakfast. There is a restaurant in the hotel. This is the start point for the CC YRE event. The phone number of the Ramada Inn is 361-882-8100. Reservations must be made by January 1, 2002 to get the room at this rate! If we take all 15 rooms, there will be no charge for the meeting room. Enclosed is a copy of the brochure for the walk on Sunday. Please make copies and distribute them at your walk events. The proposed meeting agenda is enclosed. We will approve the TVA budget at the meeting. This newsletter will serve as official notification to the clubs that the membership will vote on several revisions to our bylaws. A copy of the proposed changes is enclosed with this newsletter.

Event Report:   We ended the year with 103 events for 2001. Last year we had 123 total events sanctioned. We have sanctioned 32 events for 2002.  Please be sure event brochures are published and distributed for your 2002 YRE’s.

Our TVA treasurer, Suzanne Markgraff asked me to remind you that she sends the TVA after action sheet to the Point of Contact Person on the sanction form. Please be sure this form is properly completed and returned so your event can be cleared from the records.

Memorial and New Year’s Events:  Please remind your clubs about the December 31, 2001 and January 1, 2002 events in Fredericksburg. Enclosed is a copy of the brochure for these events. Make additional copies to meet your club’s needs. Robert Theis has worked hard to provide new and interesting trails for these events. The Memorial walk is a time to remember those from the Texas Clubs that have passed on to a greater trail and award level. Enclosed is a form for you to provide the appropriate information to Anna Cottrill so she can prepare the Memorial Board for the event.

Club Item:   Participation at events is down for many reasons. We have lost several clubs in Texas. You have all read the information from our National Office. Have you taken time to see what your club is doing to turn this disturbing trend around?? Have you taken steps to get new club members?? If you were lucky enough to get new club members, did you get them involved in the operations, or did you let them be “just members and walkers”?

New participants are the key to the survival of the AVA. Publicity is another important item for our survival. I have seen several postings on Walklist and requests to the TVA webpage asking for event information. One lady asked how she could find out about the events before the week of the event. Are we publicizing our events well enough. Do you put enough brochures on the tables at events? Do you use newspaper and public service spots on TV and radio? Do you put your brochures at sporting goods stores and fitness centers? There are many other places to use in getting the word out about your event. Don’t settle for low attendance because you did not publicize. It will take hard work to turn the corner. Many of you have shown your dedication to walking. Don’t let is slip away!

SEASONAL EVENTS:  If your club is starting a seasonal event for 2002, all of the paperwork must be submitted to the TVA President by February 1 for the event to start Memorial Day Weekend. Submissions not meeting that deadline will not be able to start in 2002. Required paperwork is the AVA and TVA sanction form, event brochure, route, map, and a $5 check to the TVA.

TVA EVENT CALENDAR: Enclosed is the current TVA event calendar for your use in planning future events. It is always best to avoid scheduling conflicts. Please review the calendar and let me know of any needed corrections.

Quality events bring more participants. Keep up your hard work to make them happen!
